A group of young nature enthusiasts from Stroud have been commended in The Wildlife Trust’s Watch Group of the Year Awards, coming joint third out of 300 groups.

Members of Stroud Wildlife Watch Group - set up locally by Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust - demonstrated their love of wildlife by creating and presenting a scrap book of their activities and achievements throughout 2011.

As a team, they built a bug hotel in the playing field in Saul, made felt from sheep’s wool on a farm in Standish and learned safe fire lighting skills in Siccaridge Wood nature reserve.

Stroud Wildlife Watch Group member, Holly Box, age 10 said: “I love the outdoor activities, and I especially loved rambling through the stream at Midger Woods last summer.”

I love the outdoor activities

Whether camping out in the wild, coppicing to improve habitat, or surveying trees, members of Wildlife Watch groups - run nationally by The Wildlife Trusts’ for young nature lovers - are passionate about enjoying, and protecting wildlife. The Watch Group of the Year Award recognises and rewards this passion.

Comments from the judges included ‘great to see bush craft & felt making’ and ‘looks like lots of fun!’ The Stroud group came joint third out of 300 Wildlife Watch groups.
